Odysseus´s main character is the king of Ithaca who was called to fight in the Trojan War. During her long twenty years wait for the love of her life, Penelope Greek Mythology, had to turn down many of marriage proposals from other men who surrounded her. She´s seen today as a role model and a symbol of fidelity. This is a very deep, unique and romantic story and it has multiple interpretations from everyone who reads it. Fidelity is somehow what makes love to be almost perfect. Fidelity is not only for a husband and wife, but also about faith and love for our friends and family. Fidelity is really hard to find now days in any type of relationship, and once it’s lost, then everything else is gone as well. When fidelity is absent, there is no trust anymore, relationships get broken and people get hurt. But how hard is it to be faithful? Is it impossible? Not at all, but like Penelope, everyone has obstacles to overcome, temptations to resist, difficult situations to face, and sometimes people around us that appear to have the best intentions end up being the devil in disguise. Fidelity requires us to be able to accept commitments and keep them through our entire lives. All men and women are called to be faithful human beings, faithful to our promises, faithful to our commitments and obligations and especially faithful in our love relationships with other people. We should be faithful in our faith, our religion if any, our marriage and our love to one another.

So, what is to be faithful? Faithful is the person, like Penelope, who doesn’t betray or abandon someone else in moments of difficulty. Faithful is the person who doesn’t cheat, who keeps his/her commitments or the promise of love made to someone, no matter what difficulties can present along the way. To love someone like Penelope did, is to want the best for that significant other. People, who love, do it because they consider that other person to be a positive aspect of their lives. Loving is a full time job, and it is not always perfect and beautiful, it often requires sacrifices that are not so pretty. Fidelity doesn’t guarantee the everlasting love between two persons, or in any personal relationship, but it sure helps a lot. Vows, promises, commitments and the act of faith in God itself are done in any given moment of our lives, but in order to be authentic, it needs to have a lasting duration. Fidelity is the ability to get that time and stability and overall the eternity of our spiritual life.
