The Successful Life of Penelope Spheeris

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Penelope Spheeris was born in the 1940´s in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her father was the owner of a traveling circus and also performed as a ¨strong man.” Her mother was a ticket taker from a circus. Penelope Spheeris spent several years traveling with her family´s circus and later on became a director, producer and screenwriter. She has produced over 20 Television Shows and Film projects since 1968. Her many productions include “The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years” (1988), “Prison Stories: Women on the Inside” (1991) (TV), “Danger Theatre” (1993) (TV) (also Writer/Executive Producer), “The Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth About Enron” (2003) (TV) and many others.

Women like Penelope have shown a profound talent throughout the years and for people like her we can be sure that women’s rights were definitely advanced in a positive direction for all societies in the world. Women have shown power throughout their hard work, talent, intelligence, diligence, and a lot of times, their toughness. It’s not only the looks that matter, women have shown that they cannot only match most men´s abilities’ and talent, but they can surpass them. It’s not a competition, but women sure have good standing in the field.

In past decades women were not allowed to work, not even to have an opinion, and even today in some cultures of the world that hasn’t changed a bit, but it will. Today women stand their ground in front of the world but there are rare cases like Penelope´s wherein they can be compensated equally or better than a man in the same position. Most of the best paid jobs used to belong to men only. Now these job positions are shared with both genders, but men still hold the best position with the highest compensations and positions in most companies all over the world. Of course, being a successful woman in these times is not an easy task. It requires much more effort than to be a successful man.

Men usually take care of themselves and don’t have the worries that any woman has. A woman, no matter how good she is at her job, needs to take care of herself, her looks, her family, her children. Her husband needs to be updated in new things that can show up along the way. Imagine being a successful director of movies like Penelope, having to shoot at 5am in the morning, but also knowing that she has children to take care of, or a husband complaining that she doesn’t spend much time with the family. Meanwhile she´s doing all she can to be successful in every aspect of her life but most of the time ends up getting complains from everyone around her because they all want is much as they can get from her. It is harder to be a successful woman these days, but it is much better than to be a housewife with no rights.
